Title of Lecture Series Attended: Fashion Photography Workshop
Artist/ Designer/ Creative: Ivanho Harlim
Date Attended (F2F/ Online): 17 March 2023
I was really excited for this workshop because fashion photography and styling is not something we can learn in school and to learn from someone who is part of the industry for a long period of time was really enriching. I also had the opportunity to bring my last semester toile and had my classmate to modelled it. Fashion photography is not what I thought it would be, there is a lot of backstage duties to be done to ensure that a photo is taken properly. Especially for editorial shoots, a lot of brainstorming is involved for props and location as well. When I had my toiled modelled, after every picture taken, I have to ensure that the garment has no creases and loose ends and if there are pins pinned, the model has to be angled in a way that is not seen on camera. I was happy to learn about Ivan’s experience in the fashion and editorial industry and the many types of photoshoots he has done. We also learnt about the lightings in the studio, the different types of camera used as well the type of pictures taken and the right poses and expressions that is recommended for models. I learnt that in a photoshoot, there should be a focal point, if it’s about the model face there should be the focus and the rest should not be focused. It was really exciting to be part of this workshop as I was intending to do a photoshoot for my garment at the end of the semester. With this workshop, I was able to understand the process behind a photoshoot and how it is typically done which was really helpful to me.

Title of lecture series attended: Leather Making Workshop
Artist/ Designer/ Creative: Noriyuki Misawa
Date attended: 4 April 2023
The leather making workshop was part of a school exhibition that we were told to go for and I was so glad to have attended this workshop because I learnt so much on leather making and the different tools and techniques used to make it. For our leather workshop, we learnt how to make a flap pencil case which was really not easy. We were given an A4 sized leather fabric and some tools to start with, we were told to follow a pattern and cut the leather according to pattern. I never knew cutting leather could be really difficult, as a newbie it was hard to cut a perfect leather, I was trying so hard to get a smooth edge but I really could not do it. Towards the end of the workshop, we learnt how to do saddle stitching for the sides of the pencil case with a really thick thread and thick needle, it was interesting to learn this new technique of stitching leather, after some time I got pretty used to it. I really enjoyed this workshop and the artist was very patient with us to learn her techniques. I was also happy to bring home a leather pencil case which was done by myself.

After the presentation, I enjoyed the panel sitting, it was really engaging to learn about the challenges facing agriculture in terms of sustainability and promoting sustainability practices at work. They also have technologies that help the farmers with their job and make it easy for farming such as the watering system of the plant and if there is going to be a bad weather.
